A police crackdown on dangerous cycling in Bournemouth and Poole has resulted in nearly two-thirds of targeted cyclists buying bike lights.
Police launched the Think Bright Think Lights winter campaign in November to increase the number of cyclists equipping their bikes with lights.
Safer Neighbourhood officers in Bournemouth and Poole were given Cycle Defect forms which were issued to cyclists riding in the dark without lights.
Within 14 days the cyclist had to prove that their bike had been equipped with lights or that lights had been purchased.
Those who did not, faced a £30 fine or a court appearance.
Of the cyclists issued with a form between November 2007 and February 2008, 62% have now bought lights.
PC Ray O'Haire, who set up the initiative in Bournemouth and Poole, said: "Cycle safety is a community concern in a number of Safer Neighbourhood areas and the Think Bright.. Think Lights campaign has actively enabled the teams to tackle the problem."
The success of the campaign has led Dorset Police to consider extending the scheme across the county.
