DETECTIVES are investigating a possible arson attack at a Poole pub, which could have ended in double tragedy.
Luckily the Red Lion's two live-in managers were woken by an alarm at 3am on Monday morning, and were able to flee uninjured after discovering the lounge bar ablaze.
Firefighters rushed to the pub in Blandford Road, Hamworthy, and police have since launched an arson investigation.
Detective Constable James Mullen, of Poole CID, said: "The managers were woken up by the intruder alarm and fortunately they were able to escape without suffering any injury - it could have been far worse.
"The lounge bar and other ground floor areas of the pub have been badly fire and smoke damaged and although we don't know the cause of the fire yet, it looks quite possible that the fire was started deliberately."
The pub is likely to stay closed for some time.
Det Con Mullen said: "I'm appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in or near the Red Lion pub, from 2.30am to 3am, to contact me urgently.
"I'd also like to hear from anyone who might know someone who might have a reason for wanting to start this fire in the pub."
