RESIDENTS were awoken by loud bangs at 1am as a 'mini firework display' went off in Canford Heath. 

People living in Canford Heath complained they startled by the "very loud" fireworks going off for about 30 minutes in the early hour of Tuesday, October 18.

The police were informed after an unsettled resident made a call at 1:20am. 

The incident has been described as "reckless and mindless behaviour" by Canford Heath councillor Chris Matthews.

Chris said: "I was woken up by the very loud bangs, often you get the odd fireworks going off but this was what sounded like a mini display.

"It went off for about half an hour, my dogs were barking away, they were absolutely terrified. 

"From a community point of view is just reckless and mindless behaviour. It's the few that cause absolute mayhem for the community.

"It is not just the effect it has on animals but people living on their own, elderly people, people with PTSD, dementia or mental health issues you have to think about who could be really traumatised by this. 

"I went to my back window to have a look at what was going on and I saw a massive one going off.

"I couldn't work out where it was exactl but it looked like it was towards Asda way." 

Another Councillor for Canford Heath ward, Sean Gabriel was also disturbed by the fireworks and has raised the question of whether fireworks should be publicly available to buy.

"It's obviously that time of year when fireworks start to become available, it's very frustrating.

"It's difficult to track down who is doing it, especially at that hour it's very annoying for residents to put up with that noise. 

"There is a huge debate that needs to be had about whether fireworks should be publicly sold.

"Anyone who wants to set fireworks off needs to set them off safely and appropriately and not do it late at night."

A spokesperson from Dorset Police said: "We received a call at 1.20am on Tuesday 18 October 2022 reporting that fireworks had been heard going off in the area of Tarrant Close in Poole.

"No specific location was identified and no further calls were received."
