Mum of woman killed in Poole crash on family's anguish

Courtney White, 23, was walking home on the evening of Sunday, December 12, last year on the footpath next to the Canford Way in Poole when she was struck by a car. The occupants reprotedly left the scene.

Dorset Police’s investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing and a total of 10 arrests have been made.

Courtney’s mum Jasmine Moores told the Daily Echo she has only recently been able to process what happened 10 months after her daughter was killed.

“Courtney was completely innocent in this and didn’t do anything wrong. I just want something done. It feels like it has almost been forgotten about,” she said.

“It is not very good at all because we can’t move on as we know we could still have all of this coming up and we have the anniversary of her death coming up.

“It will be a year in December and it just makes me feel really anxious.”

Ms Moores, who is now raising Courtney’s daughter Evie, said she receives a phone call around once a month from police saying they are still investigating.

She said she is finding it difficult but her granddaughter was “keeping us all going at the moment”.

“To be honest with you I can’t really remember the first few months after she died because I didn’t even function. My daughter Alice came round quite a lot to help me,” Ms Moores said.

“It has only really just started to sink in now and I am thinking they are still out there.

“It is every parent’s nightmare that they are still out there enjoying their lives and all our lives have been shattered by this.”

Courtney’s funeral in February saw friends and family fill St Clement’s Church in Parkstone. After the service, mourners gather on the Canford Way, which was closed by police, to allow loved ones to pay their respects.

Paying tribute to her daughter, Ms Moores said: “Courtney was a character full of life and an amazing mum to Evie we are totally heartbroken. No justice will be enough but someone needs to do time for this. I could walk past her killer in the street and not even know.

“Every day is a living nightmare for us and every night Evie looks at the brightest star in the sky – mummy star.”

Ms Moores said she can regularly hear vehicles speeding along the Canford Way.

She said something needs to be done to improve the safety along the busy stretch of road.

“It is a 50mph zone and it is quite fast but there is a walkway. I had a lot of keyboard warriors saying ‘it is not a public walkway’ but it definitely is,” Ms Moores said.

“It needs bollards, the speed brought down to 40mph or speed cameras along there.

“I think something should be done along that road and the Dorset Way stretch. Drivers fly off the roundabouts and speed up and down there.”

Eight of the 10 people arrested by Dorset Police were released without charge and will face no further police action.

A 20-year-old Poole man who was arrested in connection with the incident remains on police bail and a 19-year-old Poole man who was arrested remains released under investigation.

Sergeant Jay Griffin, of the traffic unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who sadly died as a result of this collision.

“We owe it to them to fully investigate the circumstances and comprehensively compile all available evidence so it can be presented to the Crown Prosecution Service for it to consider whether any further action is required.

“Officers have been keeping the family updated with progress of the investigation.”
