STORMY weather conditions mean the Sandbanks Ferry has still not left Poole for its planned maintenance works.
The vessel was due to be towed to Falmouth on Wednesday, November 2, for a major refit that would see it out of action for four weeks.
Close to a week later and the chain ferry is still held up in Poole Harbour – with its operators admitting they are “at the mercy of the weather”.
Every two years Sandbanks Ferry undergoes a refit, alternating between major and minor works.
While it had been hoped the service, which connects Sandbanks with Studland, would return in early December, its operators have previously said the delays “would no doubt impact” the date of completion.
However, an recent update suggests those contracted to carry out the repairs in Falmouth are willing to work additional hours to get the refit back on schedule.
A spokesperson from the Sandbanks Ferry team told the Echo: “The weather has delayed us and we are currently waiting for a weather window to allow for a safe tow.
“Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of the weather and ultimately the decision to tow rests with the tug’s captain. The contractors in Falmouth have promised to help by doing additional hours to try and keep us on schedule.”
An exact date intended for the service to resume is unknown but the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company has said a return date will be confirmed later in November.
