A BUSY road is set to be closed in both directions for a day to allow maintenance to be carried out.

The Avon Causeway will be shut from 9am on Thursday, November 24, to allow BCP Council contractors to carry out a programme of work.

Signs placed in the area warning of the closure had the date as November 22, however, the local authority has confirmed the maintenance was pushed back two days to avoid causing disruption of an event taking place at a nursery in Pitthouse Lane.

The local authority said a seven-mile diversion route will be in place via Ringwood Road, Salisbury Road, Stony Lane, Christchurch By-Pass, Fountain Way, Bargates, Fairmile Road, Hurn Road and Christchurch Road.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order is in place on the Avon Causeway on November 24 from 9am to 7pm for the safety of staff while our teams will be carrying out essential maintenance works during this time.

“This will include cutting of overhanging vegetation, verge strimming, litter collection, remarking of existing road markings, carriageway repair works, gully cleaning, signage replacement and inspections/repair works to a number of smaller bridges which cross streams.

“The works were originally scheduled for November 22, but we have altered the date to November 24 in respect of an event taking place at a local school/nursery on Pitthouse Lane.”

The council has written to residents and businesses in Avon Causeway who will be affected by the work.
