Disruption to train services between Weymouth and London Waterloo is expected to continue until around 8pm this evening.
A points failure between Dorchester South and Moreton saw "all lines blocked" for several hours.
The incident, first reported, at 12.47pm, saw trains at a standstill before lines were cleared just before 3pm.
South Western Railway warned that disruption would last until around 8pm as a result of the points failur with services subject to cancellation or delay.
A spokesperson for SWR said: "Following a problem with a set of points between Dorchester South and Moreton, all lines have now reopened. Train services may be delayed, altered, or cancelled whilst we return to normal.
"For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point.
"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey."
