A WOMAN who bought a pasta sauce from Tesco has been left feeling “sick” after finding what she says were maggots in her jar of bolognese.

Rosina James from Poole went to make herself a pasta bolognese on Monday, December 12 when she was shocked to discover SEVEN maggot-looking items in her Tesco own-brand bolognese sauce.

Mrs James has reported the unpleasant find to Tesco, who have apologised and are now investigating.

Mrs James, who bought the pasta sauce from Tesco in Yarrow Road, near Tower Park in Poole, on November 25, said: “I opened the jar on Monday evening to make pasta Bolognese but couldn’t eat the sauce because of the maggots.

“I could see seven maggots in one jar of the bolognese sauce, and they were throughout the jar, not just the top.

“And in the second jar I bought I could see around five or six.

“I felt sick – and still do now thinking about it. I kept looking at it because it’s so disgusting.

“I am not asking Tesco for compensation or my money back, I just want them to take the sauce off their shelves but they are refusing to.”

She added she would still go back to shop at Tesco but only because she knows where she is going.

“But I won’t be buying bolognese again,” she added. “In the end I had to eat plain pasta that evening.”

A Tesco spokeswoman said: “We were very sorry to hear this and have been in touch with the customer to apologise.

“The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority and we are investigating this as a priority with our supplier.

“We have stringent hygiene standards in place for all of our manufacturers and will be in touch with the customer once our investigation is complete.”

Tesco have been in discussions with their supplier and say they believe the substance is 'unlikely' to be maggots.

It could be vegetable matter, it is claimed.

A complaint was also submitted to BCP Council’s environmental health department.

A spokeswoman said: “We are investigating a complaint from a customer of Tesco in Yarrow Road, Poole.

“We will check the complaint and prioritise matters which could cause significant harm to health and will action any breaches of legislation in line with our enforcement policy.”
