EMERGENCY temporary traffic lights will be installed in Christchurch this evening as “very long delays” is anticipated in the coming days.

A “major gas leak” along the A35 at Iford Bridge and Iford roundabout in Christchurch means work is now required by SGN to fix the leak and repair the road.

Four-way traffic lights will be installed on Friday, January 6 to allow for the work to be carried out.

Morebus say they “fully expect very long delays to all services over a wide area” due to the traffic which will be caused.

SGN are unsure how long the works will be carried out for.

Dan Brown, spokesperson for gas company SGN, said: "Our engineers need to carry out essential network repairs at the Iford Roundabout from 7pm this evening (Friday 6) to ensure local properties continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.

"Due to the location of the leak, we need to install temporary traffic lights on the approaches to the roundabout junction for everyone’s safety and to manage traffic flow.

"We appreciate this is a sensitive route and thank road users in advance for their patience and understanding while we complete the required repairs.

"At this time, we’re unable to suggest how long it might take to permanently fix the leak on the affected pipe."

SGN are also carrying out repairs to a gas main on Barrack Road in Christchurch - the third time the road has been dug up in seven months.

The utilities company insist the issue this time is on a separate part to previous repairs.

Despite speculation the work would be finished either yesterday or today, SGN say this is too early.
