One of Bournemouth's zig zag paths which leads from the cliff top to the beach has been closed after a safety inspection.

The East Cliff path which starts near the Jon Egging memorial and leads to Bournemouth beach has been shut for at least the next five days.

It follows a regular site inspection of the area.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page on Friday evening, BCP Council said: "Following one of our regular site inspections we have taken the decision to temporarily close the East Cliff Zig Zag whilst we make a further assessment.

"We will be closely monitoring the area for the next five days and there will be no access during this time.

"For access to the beach on foot heading west, use the East Cliff Slope adjacent to the Russell Cotes Museum and heading east, use Tofts Zig Zag located opposite the Albany Apartments."

We have asked the council what they discovered during the site inspection which led to this decision and what day a further assessment will take place.

We have also asked if people should avoid the beach area below the zig zag path.

Bournemouth Echo:

On Thursday, the council announced major plans to transform the seafront following an £18million government cash injection.

The council said the cash would allow the prom at East Cliff to be reopened with a long-term vision to reinstate a new cliff lift.

The clifftop pathway near the Jon egging Memorial was ripped apart by a landslip in April 2016, and the toilet block and café were obliterated.

The East Cliff lift, built in 1908, was also damaged in the incident, and to this day remains out of action.
