A RETIREMENT village on the former site of Wimborne Market is set to open in early 2024 after permission was granted for the development.
McCarthy Stone is to build a new retirement village, consisting of 43 one-bedroom and 24 two-bedroom retirement apartments, just off the village green in Riverside Park, Station Road.
The major “flagship” development was initially refused by Dorset Council in July 2021, with the new and approved design reduced in size from 66 flats and 32 bungalows.
An information event is to be held on February 8 at the Allendale Centre, in Hanham Road, to inform local retirees what will be on offer at the development.
Nicki Beswarick, marketing manager for McCarthy Stone Southern, said: “Our new Retirement Village in Wimborne is starting to take shape and we anticipate strong interest from local retirees seeking to downsize and focus on getting the most from their retirement years in a development with a real community feel.
“All our developments combine top-quality homes with an enviable set of on-site facilities, and we very much look forward to showcasing the new development at the Information event.”
Once complete, the new retirement village for over 70s in Wimborne will feature a mix of chalet bungalows, bungalows and apartments set within a village green.
All housing types will be set in spacious and landscaped surroundings, central to Wimborne centre, and aims to create an “attractive, supportive, independent and vibrant retirement community setting within a town centre”.

The new village is also set to feature a host of communal facilities, including a large village green at its centre, a wellness hub, multi-functional spaces and a wellness garden with mini allotments and raised planters.
McCarthy Stone will build the retirement village on the former site of Wimborne Market, which closed at the end of 2021.
The appointment-only information event will take place between 11am and 12:30pm or 1.30pm and 3pm.
Visitors are asked to arrive 10 minutes before to make the most of the talks that will begin at the stated start times. Visitors are advised to book their places in advance by calling 0800 153 3076.
