BCP COUNCIL is currently dealing with a “large number of potholes” as the cold weather takes its toll on our road network.

The admission comes after it was revealed since the council formed in 2019, it has filled in nearly 10,000 potholes, resulting in some motorists having to pay for replacement tyres or repairs to vehicle damage.

Thousands of motorists are becoming increasingly frustrated with dodging potholes or having to reach into their pockets to pay for repairs.

Bournemouth Echo:

Steve, a tradesman from Bournemouth, said: “I drive around quite a bit and the roads are always bad at this time of year.

“Having said that I do think there can be more done to repair the roads. It’s a little annoying constantly having to swerve in and out of the road to miss them.”

Eric added: “I’m not surprised the council are having to pay out for compensation.

“I would’ve thought it would be higher though because there are that many. You’d imagine more people would put claims in.”

Bournemouth Echo:

Sean Hewitt said the roads are “full of potholes”, adding: “Somebody has given up on fixing the roads to be honest.

“If we all started putting in claims against the council for every flat tyre, soon enough they’d do something about it.”

Cllr Mark Anderson, portfolio holder for environment and place, said the council right now is dealing with a “large number of potholes” in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

He added: “We are responsible for maintaining over 780 miles of roads and pavements across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and like many other local authorities in the south west, we are currently dealing with a large number of reports of potholes in the area.

“It's normal for potholes to mostly form in winter due to the effect of freezing temperatures, followed by thawing, which can affect the roads we drive on.

“An extra £8.2 million was included in the 22/23 budget to continue maximising positivity and pride in place - including the council’s Cleaner, Greener, Safer programme, the summer readiness seasonal response initiative, as well tackling key issues such as essential road maintenance and pothole repairs.”
