AN AWARD-winning bar and restaurant inspired by the flavours of Mexico- Ojo Rojo is Trader of the Week.
Found in Bournemouth town centre, Ojo Rojo is a Mexican-inspired bar, showcasing Mezcal and Tequila based drinks, contemporary Mexican tapas food and one of the largest collections of agave spirits.
The business is the brainchild of Trevor Hill, who brought his experiences of Mexico over to an empty unit in Commercial Road nearly seven years ago.
Trevor said: “I lived in Mexico for about a year and half and went to a couple of bars and restaurants out there which had a very distinct style.
“I came up with a concept based off those and brought JJ Adams from Smoking Aces onboard. Between the two of us we’ve sculpted it into what it is now.”
Since opening, Ojo Rojo has continued to impress diners with its delicious dishes, all inspired by the traditions and flavours found in Mexico.
Thursday nights at the venue are particularly popular, when visitors are offered two for one on all burritos, quesadillas and Mexican poke bowls.

Trevor said: “We wanted to create something that was more of a contemporary style Mexican, using more ingredients and different styles while still using tacos and nachos as the bare bones.”
The drinks at Ojo Rojo are particularly special- and have seen the business recognised in this year’s Top 50 UK Cocktail Bars.
Ojo Rojo was voted 15th in the list, which is compiled annually by cocktail experts across the country.
Trevor said: “I thought, ‘oh my god’, because we’ve been named among all these prestigious cocktail bars that have been around for forever.”
While most will know Ojo Rojo for its food and drink offerings, others will know it for its events throughout the week.
Wednesday night is quiz night, and on Sunday, the venue hosts a ‘Rojo Dog Meet’ where people can bring their dogs for 15 per cent off their food.
The day is particularly fun for Ocho - the restaurant’s resident dog of four years.
Sadly, she is in need of two hip replacements, but Ojo Rojo customers have been supporting Trevor in his fundraising efforts to cover the costs.
There has also been a Go Fund Me page launched for Ocho. Search at gofundme.com for the appeal "Help us give Ocho 2 new hips".
