Sandbanks Ferry to be back in service 'earlier than expected'

Bosses for the chain ferry, which connects Sandbanks and Studland, are currently fitting the chains back on the craft. 

A few more days of testing are needed before Bramble Bush Bay will be fully operational at some point next week. 

If you are down in Sandbanks or Shell Bay you will notice we are currently putting the ferry back on the chains. This means that our testing and trials should be completed early next week and we hope to resume service during next week. Keep an eye on our social media for updates.

Jason du Toit, the ferry’s managing director, said: “We are currently putting the ferry back on the chains.

“We do need a few days of testing and hope to resume at some stage next week, a little earlier than expected.” 

Residents in Poole spotted the vessel on Friday morning being towed back to its normal location in Poole Harbour. 

The Sandbanks Ferry has been out of action since late October following a scheduled major refit that was supposed to last just four weeks. 

However, while being towed to Falmouth, the ferry sustained damage to the prow arms, which were severely bent in the incident – “a major problem”, according to one boat expert. 

Back in December, Mr du Toit was unable to comment on the cause of the damage due to potential legal issues, but has previously said a letter had been issued to the tug company “holding them fully responsible”. 

He added: “Only the tow crew were there, they have their version, and we have expert opinion. But everything is still under investigation.”
