A DORSET attraction is giving people the chance to ride in one of the most famous tanks in the world.

The Tank Museum, in Bovington, is offering up a ride in a Tiger 131 - the only running Tiger I in the world.

The attraction will be holding a special day dedicated to the Tiger tank on Saturday, April 22.

Visitors travel from around the world to see the former German Second World War tank run, and this year marks the 80th anniversary of Tiger 131's capture by British forces in North Africa on April 24, 1943.

The Tank Museum is giving Tiger fans the chance to win a ride in the exhibit in a charity auction and raffle.

The lucky winners of each will take their seats at Tiger Day, where more than 4,000 visitors are expected to gather.

The winner of the second place prize in the raffle will earn a ride in the Panzer III tank.

The Germans used the two tanks closely alongside each other in the early days of the Tiger's service.

A third place winner will get a ride in the Sherman Fury from the 2014 film Fury, which also featured Tiger 131.

Tank Museum spokesman David Willey said: "Tiger 131 is the most famous tank in the world and there are a lot of tank fans who will jump at the chance for a ride in this Second World War icon."

The auction will run March 10 to March 20 and the raffle will be drawn on the April 3.

All profits will go towards supporting the museum's historic tank collection and ensuring that Tiger 131 can be kept in running order for years to come.

The museum, also a registered charity, is home to more than 300 tanks from 26 nations, holding one of the world's most significant collection of fighting armour.

These range from the world's first ever tank, Little Willie, through to the British Army's current battle tank, Challenger 2.
