BROKEN traffic lights for unmanned roadworks caused “utter chaos” for several hours.
The temporary traffic light in Smugglers Lane North, Christchurch, stopped working on Saturday, March 18, which resulted in residents directing traffic themselves.
According to BCP Council roadwork documents the affected area, which is at the junction with Smugglers Lane South to number 58, is for SGN installation and maintenance works.
The traffic signals were installed on February 22 and are due to be in place until March 31.
One resident said the main road through west Highcliffe was blocked as traffic moved in from both directions trying to negotiate past the lights.
They said: “Buses delayed [and] residents are trying to direct traffic themselves. A slow handclap for whoever is responsible for this one.
“Local motorists need to avoid the road.”
Ward councillor Andy Martin contacted the contractor in an attempt to get the situation fixed and described the situation at one point as "absolute chaos".
Cllr Martin said: “Been awaiting here for an hour for the traffic contractors to arrive. They were called at least two hours ago. Shocking.”
Shortly after 1pm, contractors arrived and made the lights operational with a full inspection scheduled for Monday, March 20.
