THE leader of BCP Council has spoken of his “anger” following a leak involving 200 barrels of fluid in Poole Harbour.

Councillor Phil Broadhead told the Echo it is “not good enough” for any sort of leak to occur no matter how “small” it is.

It comes after 200 barrels of ‘reservoir fluid’ was released into the water at Poole Harbour on Sunday.

The leak occurred at a pipeline operated by Perenco UK which operates Wytch Farm oil field.

Perenco said the fluid comprised approximately 85 per cent water and 15 per cent oil.

BCP Council leader Phil Broadhead told the Echo: “When I got the call yesterday my first reaction was anger, frustration and worry; we have a really delicate eco-system here in the second largest natural harbour in the world.

“But also, we are a major tourist resort and the last thing you want, no matter how small a leak, is any oil in the water whatsoever, soi it clearly quite concerning.

“My focus at the moment as leader of the council is to work with the agencies to deal with the incident.

“Once we have some clear air there is going to have to be some serious questions asked: why and how did this happen in the first place, what measures can be put in place to ensure this can certainly never happen again and what consequences are there going to be for this.

“Whilst this facility has been open since just before I was born, it is not good enough for anything to be escaping regardless how small it is.”
