A BOURNEMOUTH author has published a new book to inspire youngsters on how to look after Dorset beaches.

Pond Life tells the story of Samuel the snail - the first published book by Dominic Brancaleone.

It follows Samuel on a journey of discovery as he meets colourful characters making him think about the environment, and his impact on it.

The book, for children between three and eight-years-old, aims to help them become more aware of how they can play a part in protecting the planet by raising environmental awareness.

Dominic, also a local surfing enthusiast in Boscombe, was inspired by his four-year-old daughter Leia.

He said: “As a family, we love the beach and visit all the time. It’s sad to see litter, plastic, and pollution build-up.

“I wanted to combine my writing and my passion for a deeper appreciation for the beaches and oceans being clean.

Bournemouth beaches have had their issues over the years with littering and pollution, so this is a way to inspire the next generation to think about how to protect them.”

Leia who showcased Pond Life to her class said: “I want to write a book like daddy when I’m older, me and my friends all love Samuel.”

Dominic, who previously studied at Bournemouth University, teamed up with Craig Montgomery, to illustrate the story.

Dominic said: “We wanted to use animal characters to help bring the story to life, with our protagonist being as innocent as the readers.

“With Earth Day approaching, our aim is to raise awareness of this issue in a fun and inspiring way that younger children will understand.”

Pond Life has made its way to local nurseries and schools, one being the premature baby unit in Poole Hospital.

The book is independently published and can be bought on Amazon.
