Dorset Council has amended traffic warning signs after confusion over road closures.

Digital signs on key routes said: "Road closed 15th May to 21st July 23".

They are intended to warn motorists about an upcoming closure to Dorchester Road in Weymouth.

But the signs omitted the fact which road would be closed - leading drivers to think the closures related to the key routes the signs are on.

One sign is next to the B3157 at the bottom of the Granby Industrial Estate.

Meanwhile a sign on the Esplanade outside Enzo displayed the same message leading to further confusion about upcoming road closures.

One motorist said: "I was really confused after seeing the signs because I wasn't sure which road was closing.

"I knew Dorchester Road was closing but I started to think maybe there were more roads about to close.

"They should have been clear really."

Dorset Council confirmed that the signs had intended to warn drivers about the impending northbound closure to Dorchester Road between May 15 and July 23.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: "The digital display signs do relate to the Dorchester Road works. We asked the contractor to make the necessary changes to the signs to make it clear they relate to the northbound closure on Dorchester Road, and they have confirmed to us that they have made the changes.”

The signs now display the message "Dorch Rd Closed Northbound 15 May - 21 July".

From Monday, May 15, Dorchester Road near the Morrisons supermarket - between its junction with Roman Close and the Manor Roundabout - will be closed in the northbound direction so SGN can replace 200 metres of gas main.

Although Morrisons will remain open as usual, drivers will only be able to access it from the Manor roundabout (southbound) only. And when drivers leave the car park, they will only be able to turn left (southbound).
