PEOPLE have been paying tribute to one of Bournemouth Oceanarium's most-loved and popular residents.

The seaside attraction has announced that its green iguana Ziggy has died after 13 years living within the Oceanarium and delighting visitors.

A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately due to ongoing health issues that had been noted in a previous health check, our keepers and the vets made the difficult decision to put him to sleep for the sake of his welfare.

“Ziggy has called the Oceanarium home for the last 13 years after we rescued him from the RSPCA.

“Ziggy has been an extremely popular character and many would refer to him as gentle giant who was much loved by all, starting everyone's journey with a smile.

“You will be truly missed.”

In response, gutted residents have been posting messages as well as pictures of Ziggy, and sharing their memories.

One woman said: “My mother and I met you four years ago and we had the honour of giving you a cool down with the sprinkler when we were aquarists for a day. Rest in peace beautiful boy.”

Another person said: “This is so sad, we were just looking for him this morning. Sending love to all of those who did such a wonderful job in caring for Ziggy.”
