BCP Council has issued a warning to visitors of Bournemouth beach this bank holiday weekend as temperatures are set to rise. 

The council is running a message this weekend asking people to only leave footprints on the award-winning beaches’ sand and is asking visitors not to litter. 

Temperatures are expected to touch 20C over the weekend and it is anticipated thousands could come to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s beaches. 

Anthony Rogers, BCP Council’s head of seafront, said: “We welcome all the visitors who want to make the most of this burst of Bank Holiday sunshine and enjoy our miles of award-winning beaches.  

“All we ask is that you leave only footprints when you head home.”

“Around 2000 tons of waste is left on the beach each year, which is expensive to collect using tractors, surf rakes and litter-pickers.  

“So if visitors can pick up their litter and leave only their footprints it will really help us protect this stunning environment.” 

BCP Council has issued the following tips: 

  • Drop your litter in the colour coded waste bins at the end of the day. Use the green bins for recycling and red bins for general waste. If beach bins are full – take your rubbish home and dispose of it safely. 
  • Bring your own re-useable food containers, cutlery and even ashtrays. 
  • Use the free water refill stations across the seafront. Last year’s installation of 150 water refill points has helped save thousands of plastic bottles ending up on the shoreline, with 19,000 saved during July 2022 alone. 
  • Additional measures, such as toy libraries, where children’s beach toys could be recycled and reused, can also be found along the seafront.
