Firefighters rushed to a blaze on a common which is believed to have been started deliberately by children.

On-call firefighters from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire on Pennington Common at around 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The team from Lymington was sent following multiple calls from the public reporting the blaze.

The fire involved gorse and was distinguished using hose reels, with fire crews leaving the scene at 8.12pm.

Hampshire Police was informed of the incident as the fire service believe the fire was caused by children.

Councillor Jack Davies, Town and District Councillor for Pennington, had previously warned the public to exercise caution around the common.

He emphasised the danger of fires on dry ground and that it can take only a discarded cigarette to set dry grass ablaze.
