POOLE Pirates put one hand on the BSN Series trophy with a dominant 62-28 victory over Glasgow Tigers in the first leg of the final.

There were some big hauls for Zach Cook and Richard Lawson, with 11 and 13+1 points respectively, whilst Steve Worrall’s drop to fifth in the order drew a response of 14+1 points as he earned a paid maximum.

A flying start from Pirates’ new number one Lawson and Anders Rowe helped the home side to a maximum in the opening heat.

Former Wimborne Road favourite Chris Harris threatened to interrupt Pirates’ one-two heading into the final corners of the race, but Rowe stood firm to take home second place.

Poole’s lead remained intact after the second race, Kyle Newman and Adam Roynon in second and third respectively losing out to 16-year-old Ace Pijper.

Whilst his elder brother Ben looked comfortable throughout heat three, Zach Cook had to recover to regain second spot after Claus Vissing overtook him early on in the second lap.

In his first ride at five this season Steve Worrall looked comfortable, outpacing opposite number Benjamin Basso to the white line.

Roynon returned to add another point to his total, Pirates leading 17-7 at the end of the fourth race.

The Cook brothers were bested in their second trip around the shale, ‘Bomber’ Harris displaying his knowledge of Wimborne Road in a 3-3 heat tie.

It was a similar story in heat six, Pirates again tempering a Glasgow rider’s race win as Lawson and Rowe trailed Basso.

A tight battle in race seven between Newman and Tom Brennan for third place ended with the Glasgow rider buckling and flying off his bike heading out of a corner.

Newman himself had a dicey moment during the rerun that did not include Brennan, Pirates adding another four points to their total as Worrall picked up his second race win.

With the second leg in mind, Poole worked to stretch their advantage further.

Rowe completed the overtake on Pijpers early on in race eight, and whilst Roynon put late pressure on the teenager, Pirates came away from the race with another four points.

Siblings Ben and Zach produced Pirates’ third maximum of the evening, the pair roaring into the lead and not looking back in heat nine.

Whilst the trophy could not be won on the evening, Pirates certainly put at least one hand on it, further elongating their winning margin to 20 via Lawson’s race win in heat 10.

Newman’s battle with Harris in heat 11 may have ended up with the Glasgow rider in second, but it allowed captain Worrall to pick up a third race win.

A tumble from Pijper threatened to restart race 12, but the youngster showed sportsmanship as he quickly cleared the track to allow the heat to continue.

Ben Cook picked up the race win, with Roynon adding another point behind Glasgow skipper Tom Brennan.

Worrall’s 100 per cent win record came to an end in heat 13, picking up the bonus as his replacement at number one Lawson ended up the winner.

Zach Cook’s first race win of the night in the penultimate heat pushed Pirates’ lead to 30 points, before Worral and Lawson swapped places in the final heat for a fifth Poole maximum of the evening.
