WOODEN fencing has been put up across a building site which caused misery for residents living across the road.

A wooden fence has been put up around the perimeter of Kingsmere Park housing development off New Road, West Parley, following complaints of dust.

Large lorries and excavators had been carrying out work on the land and churning up dust from the ground which would fly up and land on the houses nearby.

Now, though, Bellway Homes, the developers behind the 386-home scheme, said wooden fencing was put up to reduce dust from the site.

A spokeswoman said: “The wooden fence will be an additional dust prevention measure and more effective than the hoarding that was previously in position.”

The company said it also had reduced deliveries to the site, had an on-site 10mph speed limit and redirected groundwork labour from foundation excavation to drainage during dry spells.

Residents were up in arms over the dust, which could be seen in people’s back gardens and even in people’s bathrooms and conservatories.

Kaye Woodward, a project manager, had previously complained to Environmental Health when the dust was flying from the site and was coating both the interior and exterior of her home.

However, she said the dust has been better lately – but only because the rain had dampened down the particles.

She said: “The dust has been a lot better lately, but it is not because of the fencing which was finished at some point last week.

“The developers are not at the excavating stage at the moment, they’re just putting the foundations in place on the ground, so dust isn’t being churned up.

“Plus, there has been on and off rain.

“However, the fence wouldn’t stop the dust, in fact Environmental Health has told me that when it’s dry and windy, no amount of fencing would stop the dust.

“Some residents are also angry about the view now outside their house, saying this is what we have to look at for the next four years – but you can’t have it all.”

The site is also home to a new Lidl, in Christchurch Road, which is expected to open at some point in the autumn.
