GIANT mythical 'dragons' have been seen soaring in the skies of Poole.

Dog walkers and passersby often stop and gaze in awe at the giant creatures graciously flailing about in the air.

Tim Rohn, 69, said he "owns one of the four largest kites in the UK and one of 18 biggest kites in the world".

His dragon kites measure a whopping 75ft by 35ft and are often seen flying above Baiter Park in Poole.

Amarinth, his giant purple dragon kite, was custom-made for him by a German kite maker.

Meanwhile, his fiery orange dragon is named Smorg.

Bournemouth Echo:

Tim has always been passionate about his hobby and said: “I've been a kite flyer for 30-plus years.

"I got out of doing the normal two-line kites and got into show kites because somebody got me flying one of their dragons.

Tim, who refers to himself as a dragon master, added: “I fly [in Poole] regularly with them and an awful lot of people know me down there because my dragons have been photographed quite regularly.”

Tim hopes to one day persuade BCP Council to have a special event for kites in Dorset, he said: “I'm trying to create enough stir that maybe the council will create an event.

“We only have one (kite) event on the south coast, whereas there used to be events all the way along here.

“I’ve always enjoyed kite flying in Poole, so an event around here would be great.”

The dragon kites were made by the German 3D kite designer, Cartsen Domann.

Tim added: “They are the peak of his creation of kites, and they look brilliant.”

His kites are only allowed to fly up to 200ft to comply with Civil Aviation Authority guidelines.

He is still regularly flying the dragons.

Tim, who lives in Ensbury Park with his wife Kate, will also be showcasing his kites at St Anne's International Kite Festival in Blackpool from September 8 – 10.
