As a result of the closure, delays of nearly two hours were reported, with families leaving their vehicles in nearly 30-degree heat while they waited for police to reopen the road.
Delays of up to an hour were also reported on the westbound carriageway, as a result of the crash.
Drivers and passengers were forced to change plans due to the traffic, with one woman telling the Daily Echo that her sister wasn’t able to visit her in London.
Others missed flights as they were on their way to the airport and became stuck in the congestion.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is appealing for any witnesses who have not already contacted the police to call 101, quoting reference 44230367136.
