PLANS for a new 122-bedroom care home in Poole have been submitted, just months after approval was granted for an extension to the current home.
An application to demolish Eagles Mount Care Home on the corner of Birds Hill Road and Longfleet Road and rebuild a modern care home on the same site has been submitted to BCP Council.
The care home has been subject to a number of planning applications, most recently plans to add an additional two storeys of accommodation, creating 33 new rooms, granted in December 2022.
The applicant, Luxury Care Birds Hill, say these approved plans form a ‘valid fall-back position’, should the new application not be approved.
The current building, dating from the early 1990’s, is described as a ‘substantial three-storey modern building’ in the design and access statement attached to the new application.
But, if approved, this building would be demolished and replaced with a new seven storey purpose-built home, adding an additional 25 bedrooms.
The proposed building will be L-shaped, and its smaller footprint would result in a ‘much-reduced area of hardstanding’, the application said.
While the planned building is larger in size than the current one, including the planned two storey extension, planners say the top two floors would be inset, with landscaping and materials chosen to reduce its visibility.
Landscaping is a key concept of the proposals, the applicant says, with planters set to be positioned on each level of the building. The two road frontages would be fully planted, too.
Plans would also add more outside space for residents, with ‘a much larger landscaped garden area, larger terraces and balconies’.
There will be increased parking provision for the care home, provided in the basement, with a total of 39 spaces, with additional storage for 22 bikes.
The design and access statement said the new home would make better use of the land in the area, adding additional specialist care home places while improving the amenity for residents.
It concluded that the proposal ‘ought to be supported and approved by the council’.
It said: “This application represents an opportunity to contribute to the regeneration of the town with a high-quality development within a prominent location.”
A public consultation is running until October 1.
