A GOLF club was forced to shut after a fire broke out and “badly damaged” a building during the early hours. 

Christchurch Golf Club, in Riverside Avenue, Iford, currently has a police van and a cordon up at the entrance as police investigate a fire which broke out shortly before 5am on Monday, September 18. 

Extensive damage was suffered to a club building, with the blaze spreading out to the nearby driving range. 

It is unclear what the damage looks like or exactly what has been damaged in the blaze, but nearly a dozen fire engines were called out to tackle the inferno.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to Riverside Avenue, Bournemouth at 4.01am this morning (18 September) for a fire involving a two storey building.

"Nine fire crews attended, from Christchurch (x2), Springbourne, Redhill Park, Ferndown, Poole (x3) and New Milton, together with a support unit from Hamworthy, an aerial ladder platform from Salisbury, and water carriers from Ringwood and Poole. 

"Our stop came at 6.13am, with the building badly damaged, and firefighters remained on scene until approx. 8.30am. 

"Investigations into the cause are on-going with Dorset Police." 

A county force spokesman said: "Dorset Police received a report at 4.43am on Monday 18 September 2023 from the fire service, which was responding to a fire involving a caravan at Iford Golf Course off Riverside Avenue in Bournemouth. 

"It was reported that the fire had caused extensive damage and had spread to a nearby driving range. 

"Officers have attended the scene and are working with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire.  

"A cordon has been put in place as an examination of the scene is carried out." 

Christchurch Golf Club said: “We regret to inform you that an unforeseen incident has occurred overnight, leading to the temporary closure of our centre. 

“Please be assured that everyone is safe, and the situation is being handled diligently. 

“The safety of our visitors and staff remains our utmost priority. We will keep you updated as we assess the situation and work towards reopening.” 

The club added: “A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated firefighters who responded swiftly and courageously this morning. Your efforts are truly appreciated.”
