A LONE sailor became lost and disorientated in Poole Harbour late at night.

The yachtsman on his way from Guernsey on a 35ft yacht and had not intended on entering the harbour.

However, after suffering electrical issues including the loss of navigation equipment, the sailor decided to enter Poole as a safe haven while repairs were carried out.

Poole RNLI lifeboat volunteers were called to the scene at 11pm on Thursday, October 5, after the sailor entered Poole Harbour and found himself aground and unsure of his position.

Both of Poole’s lifeboats launched and the vessel was soon located in the north channel and a crew member placed onboard.

The lifeboats and crew then guided the casualty to Poole Quay Boat Haven.

Volunteer crew member Max Underhill said: “Tonight was an unfortunate incident after the skipper had lost navigation aids and was seeking a safe haven for repairs.

“Poole Harbour at night is lit up like a Christmas tree with the hundreds of navigation marks and flashes and is a challenge to navigate if you are not familiar with the area.

“We’re glad we were able to assist and get the sailor back to a safe haven.”
