THE Christmas light switch on is a highlight in a town’s calendar – but what about when it doesn’t go to plan?
That is exactly what happened at this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On’ event in Christchurch town centre.
Residents and visitors had got to the high street for 5.30pm to catch the Mayor of Christchurch, Councillor Vivienne Charrett, countdown to the switch on.
“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1”, she called – but nothing happened.
After a chuckle among crowds, it was announced another countdown would be happening.
“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1”, she called again – but still nothing.
The crowds shared more laughter, before erupting into a cheer when the lights then switched on after a brief delay.
It was a humorous part of the night, but one that definitely didn’t dampen Christmas spirits, and certainly didn't ruin a successful event in the town.
