RESIDENTS are celebrating after a large campaign stopped an historic sycamore tree from being felled.

The tree, on private land in East Street, Wareham, close to Sainsbury’s, was earmarked last month to be chopped down.

A planning application for the 150-year-old tree to be felled has been refused by Dorset Council.

Explaining the refusal, the council officer said felling it at this time "is not necessary or desirable".

The report added: “This mature sycamore stands within the Wareham Town Centre Conservation Area.

“It is readily visible from public view and makes a positive contribution to the character of the area.

Bournemouth Echo: Residents rally against a proposed felling of a sycamore tree in Wareham

“There are few large trees within the locality and this heightens the tree’s importance. The tree’s form and presence of a cavity with associated decay is acknowledged.

“Consideration has been given to the degree of risk that the tree may present and whether there is sufficient justification to fell the tree.

“It is believed that felling is not necessary or desirable at this time. More proportionate remedial works could be carried out on the tree, whilst retaining an acceptable degree of public visual amenity.

“It is concluded that removal of the tree at this time is premature and will erode the distinct character and appearance of the area.”

The refusal has “delighted” many objectors to the application.

Resident Deborah Hawkins said: “I’m very proud that people came together to fight for the tree.

“It’s going to benefit the wildlife, the squirrels and birds, as well as the people who live here. It sounds silly but a tree can bring so much happiness to people.”

Chris Hockley, a member of the eco group Planet Purbeck as well as Sustainable Wareham, said he is “highly delighted” at the refusal.

The 73-year-old said: “It’s important for all of us to remember to try to preserve trees as best as we can. I think the applicant was a little too premature in his desire to fell the tree.

“We live in an area in Purbeck which is one of the most nature rich areas and we should be proud of this, not destroying trees.

“It’s a baron street and it’s a lovely focal point for people who live here.”
