A YOUTH in West Howe was found with a sling shot during a stop and search.

Bournemouth police officers were patrolling the area in Bournemouth when they stopped the boy.

During the search, he was also found to have pellets with the sling shot. Officers seized the weapon from him.

A Bournemouth police spokesman said: “Considering the nature of the items and the individual's age, it was determined that a voluntary interview will be arranged.

“The possession of such items, especially in public spaces, is a serious concern for the safety of our community.

“As a result, the offensive weapon has been seized and appropriate steps will be taken in accordance with the law.

“We remain committed to keeping our neighbourhoods safe and secure, and we encourage anyone with information regarding similar incidents to come forward and report it to us.

“Let's continue working together to ensure a safer environment for everyone in our community.”

Police officers have the power to stop and search residents if they have “reasonable grounds” to suspect the individual is carrying illegal drugs, a weapon, stolen property or something which could be used to commit a crime, such as a crowbar.

But a stop and search without “reasonable grounds” can only be done if it has been approved by a senior police officer.

This can happen if it’s suspected serious violence could take place, the individual is carrying a weapon or has used one and is in a specific area.
