POLICE are investigating allegations of an assault involving Dorset army cadets while they were on their annual camp.

A number of cadets, some as young as 12, were arrested an interviewed following the alleged assault on a 13-year-old boy at Beckingham Camp, near Lincoln. It was reported to police on August 2, but is thought to have taken place the previous day.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire police said: "Following investigation seven boys were arrested and interviewed with an appropriate adult. Three were subsequently released without charge.

"Four boys aged between 12 and 14 were released on bail pending further enquiries which are active and ongoing."

More than 300 youngsters from Dorset's Army Cadet Force (ACF) made the trip to Lincolnshire to take part in military-style exercises and activities.

Major John Bradshaw, chief executive officer for Dorset ACF, said they were co-operating fully with the police investigation and parents of the children involved were being kept fully informed.

He said: "The police are following through the incident and we are leaving it with them."

In total, 346 12-18-year-olds from across Dorset, including many from Poole and Bournemouth, attended the annual camp in Beckingham. They took part in team-building activities such as climbing and canoeing.

The ACF is a national organisation offering youngsters the opportunity to learn military skills and take part in a wide range of physical activities.
