WILLIAM Fox-Pitt led Great Britain to eventing bronze medal glory and then described their achievement as a "miracle".

Sturminster Newton star Fox-Pitt rode his charge Parkmore Ed with precision in Hong Kong as Team GB completed the three-day event with 185.70 penalty points. Germany took gold with 166.10, with Australia claiming the silver.

And to cap off a memorable night for the eventing team, debutant Tina Cook stormed to a bronze in the individual event, with Fox-Pitt finishing a creditable 11th.

Fox-Pitt said: "It was a difficult course tonight with tight turns. It was big enough but it rode really nicely with the horses jumping well and I was pleased with him (Parkmore Ed) tonight because he has been anxious under the lights.

"My week has been full of if onlys' and maybes' but that's the sport. It couldn't have gone better, he was remarkable.

"It turned out fantastically well, not short of a miracle and we are very proud of our bronze."

Fox-Pitt's coolness under pressure was key as only Cook was able to ride a clear round during yesterday's showjumping phase.

But with the North Dorset man only notching four penalty points during his round, Great Britain had all but secured the bronze despite Mary King's uncharacteristic eight-point haul on Call Again Cavalier.

The individual success was all the more emotional for Cook, on board Miners Frolic, who believed her only Olympic chance passed her by when she was reserve for Britain in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

"I have waited a while," she said. "I went to Sydney as reserve which was a fantastic experience but also a frustrating one.

"I was slightly wishing one of my fellow competitors might get a bruise and give me the opportunity to compete, but they didn't.

"I got the opportunity here and the horse went very well in all three phases and for a young horse I am very proud of him."
