ORGANISERS of Christchurch Carnival have hit back at people who have criticised them for a poor performance at Saturday's soggy event.

Despite the lashing wind and rain, stalwart supporters and loyal fans turned out to line the puddle-strewn pavements and watch the enthusiastic entries parade around the streets of Christchurch and Purewell.

The number of entries for the centenary celebration carnival was 47, but due to the dire weather some groups, including samba dancers and a band, did not show, leaving the procession short.

Kim Brook, secretary to the carnival committee, said: "It was really atrocious weather all day and up at Stanpit people who had turned out couldn't even decorate their floats.

"So far, thanks to our brilliant sponsors and the die-hard supporters who turned out on Saturday evening, we have managed to cover all our costs for the event plus a little extra for the charities.

"People don't realise how much effort actually goes into organising and funding an event like this and we'd like to thank everyone who did make the effort - it really does make such a difference."

Kim added: "Unfortunately we can't control Mother Nature.

"We are never going to please everyone but hope that everyone who comes to the regatta this weekend has a great time."

The weekend entertainment at Christchurch Quay will include a performance by 80s hit makers Dr and the Medics.

A grand fireworks display in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the event will take place on Saturday at 10pm.

Entry is free for everyone until 4pm.

After 4pm adult entry is £5.
