A HYDROTHERAPY pool in North Dorset is facing closure just weeks before a meeting that could guarantee its long-term future.

A staffing crisis at the splash pool in Sturminster Newton may see it close on August 27, leaving dozens of disabled people facing long journeys to an alternative facility or missing out altogether on pain relieving sessions.

The Stour View pool narrowly escaped the axe in a review of day services by Dorset County Council in April, with councillors agreeing to a community takeover.

Now just weeks from the presentation of a business plan by volunteers to County Hall care chiefs, sickness and resignation among its specialist staff may scupper the plans of community workers. Dr Guy Patterson, a community officer for Dorset with Help the Aged, said that many people in the north of the county relied on the Sturminster pool.

"There are a number of older people who benefit from use of the pool, particularly those recovering from hip operations and who suffer mobility issues.

"To lose the pool would be a great detriment to them," said Dr Patterson.

Overcoming the staffing crisis was vital to the pool's long-term future, said the elderly care expert.

"If anyone can step into the breach, even on a temporary basis, it will allow us to make it to the finish line and present our business case to Dorset County Council," he added.

Pat Dent, who is aged in her 70s, told the Daily Echo that the splash pool in Sturminster Newton is "vital" to her ability to move around.

"I would be heartbroken if the pool closed.

"I use it every week.

"If I miss a session, the difference to my movement is amazing.

"It makes a huge difference to my mobility," said the retired secretary.

"We are looking into the training needed for anyone who comes forward," said community development worker Sarah Williams.
