SAXON Square is set to get a 21st century makeover after plans to revive and spruce up the shopping centre were unanimously approved by Christchurch Borough Council.

After years of negotiations between previous landlords and council planners failed, new owners RReef UK Property have submitted the second stage of their overall plan for the Square's redevelopment.

Shops in Saxon Square and as far as Pound Lane will benefit from new glazed canopies to lighten the walkways with new paving and street furniture also proposed to modernise the area.

The plans also include uplighting for the Town Hall and the Saxon cross, which will highlight the two historic features in the shopping centre.

Kate Keens, from planning consultants Drivers Jones, agents for RReef said: "These proposals are an important step in the revival of the centre.

"Most importantly they will encourage useability and Saxon Square will be enhanced as a location for community events. "As a result of the investment and design process, the development will contribute to the vitality of the whole town centre. "It will be a noticeable but sympathetic change to an important part of Christchurch."

Councillor David Jones, head of the planning control committee said: "Saxon Square is very important to the whole of the Borough of Christchurch. "It is looking tired and does need revitalising."

Vice-chairman Cllr Colin Jamieson said: "I believe it will bring a greater viability and enhance the vista of the Square. "It is important to recognise this is only the second step in a phased application and it is our job to move it forward and allow this progress."
