GLOVES left on a storage heater to dry in a flat caught fire over the weekend.
Firefighters were called to a flat in Glenmoor Road, Ferndown, on Sunday evening, April 28.
It was because of a neighbour who heard the fire alarms setting off before calling 999 that the damage to the flat was “relatively minor”.
A spokesman at Ferndown fire station said: “Luckily, there were smoke alarms fitted. Due to the actions of a quick thinking neighbour who called the fire service after hearing the alarm and seeing smoke in the building, the damage was relatively minor.
“This incident could have gone very differently. It highlights the importance of having smoke alarms fitted and making sure you are testing them regularly.”
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s spokeswoman added: “Crews from Ferndown and Redhill Park were called at to Glenmoor Road at 10.12pm yesterday evening following reports of a property fire.
“On arrival, firefighters found a fire involving a space heater and clothes, which two breathing apparatus wearers extinguished using a hose reel jet. Our stop was in at 10.37pm.”
