VOTED best album in this year's BBC Jazz Awards, this is the debut disc from a Bristol-based outfit, calling themselves "post-jazz rockers", formed by drummer Clive Deamer and bassist Jim Barr of 90s trip-hop superstars Portishead.
Pete Judge (trumpet) and Jake McMurchie (sax) complete the line-up, and a mighty fine noise they make, an aural voyage across a sea of diverse sounds and influences, ranging from funk-rock to laid-back mellow soul via punk, rock, avant-garde and anything else you care to mention.
Clearly the band get a kick out of what they do, and this album shows not only a huge amount of ability but also lashings of inventiveness.
This collection of simple, catchy tunes is strangely irresistible.
