Whether it's toast and tea, coffee and cereal or a full English, breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. Despite this, one in six children, two in five teenagers, and one in five adults in the UK skip breakfast every day. However, this week is National Breakfast Week and Kellogg's is setting out to change the nation's attitudes about our morning meal. Double Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes has been emphasising the importance breakfast plays in raising energy levels and performance.

"When you need to perform either physically or mentally, you need to fuel your body and brain with energy," she says. "Skipping breakfast will give you the worst possible start to your day." Visit kellogs.co.uk/wakeup or call 0800 626 066 for free recipe suggestions.

* * * If your kids fancy themselves as the next Jamie Oliver or Nigella Lawson, entries are still welcome for the Tesco Children's Challenge. The competition is open to 10-14 year olds, and gives budding chefs a chance to showcase their talents.

To enter, children must submit their very own recipe - using local produce if possible - together with details about where they would source ingredients. Judges will choose their favourite based on culinary creativity and writing skills, and the winner will get to spend a day in the kitchen at Le Bateau Bistro in Ashley Cross. Working alongside head chef Nick Cook, they will prepare their winning recipe, which will be selected as Dish of the Day. The winner will also meet celebrity chef Mark Hix and will receive a £50 Tesco voucher. The closing date for entries is September 2. Entry forms are available at Tesco in Tower Park, and online at bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/tescochildrenschallenge.
