TO witness a 1950s style rock n' roll band at half-one on a Saturday morning at a pub in Bournemouth is no common occurrence. To see them sandwiched between 1920s swing tunes and a burlesque dancer makes the experience even more surreal - especially if the room is full of individuals dressed as flappers and suited gentlemen.
This is the Speakeasy club night that features the Bournemouth-based rockabilly act The Borderlines. They play hits such as Elmore James' Shake Your Moneymaker and Dust My Broom, Mojo Working by Muddy Waters, Baby Please Don't Go by Big Joe Turner, Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues and Gone Gone Gone by Carl Perkins.
The Borderlines' visual performance matches their sound and is riveting to watch. Their slicked back greasy rocker hair and tattoos match their dominant stage presence. The most basic drum kit is smashed with every beat, guitar solos are played on the knees of the performer and a double bass often steals the show with booming bass lines.
Watching the Borderlines at Speakeasy is a great way to spend the early hours of the morning.
