A car plunged off a bridge into the river below leading to a dramatic rescue.

Two members of the public rushed to the scene and freed the driver as the car started to fill with water.

Police said the car had come off the bridge following a two-vehicle crash on the A352 and ended up in the water. Officers immediately closed the road.

Police say that no serious injuries were reported. Fire and ambulance also attended.

A spokesperson for Sherborne Police said: "Upon arrival at the scene, we found that two members of the public had assisted the driver to get out of the vehicle by breaking a window as water started entering the vehicle from the River Yeo.

"Other emergency services responded very quickly, and fortunately the driver of the vehicle was unhurt."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "A two-vehicle road traffic collision was reported at 9.52am near Westbury. One car had come off a bridge and gone into the water. 

"No serious injuries were reported. The road was closed and fire and ambulance also attended.

"The local authority has been informed of damage to the bridge."

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 9.57am today with reports of a vehicle stuck in water on the A352, Sherborne.

"Initially, one fire engine from Sherborne was mobilised along with two technical rescue vehicles from Weymouth and one fire engine from Yeovil (DSFRS). 

"On our arrival, crews found one vehicle had left the road and entered a river but the driver was out. 

"Crews used working at height equipment to bring the casualty to safety and left in the care of the ambulance crews on scene."
