HELPING Dorset's threatened marine life is the main aim behind the 2008 Walk for Wildlife.

Dorset Wildlife Trust's sponsored walks or run on Sunday, September 21 will directly benefit the work of Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve at Kimmeridge Bay.

"We have an amazing variety of marine wildlife here in Dorset, but it faces a lot of threats and is often overlooked," said marine warden Julie Hatcher.

"Here at the marine reserve, we are trying to make people aware of what we have and what we stand to lose if we don't start taking care of it," she said.

A day in the life of a marine warden at the Fine Marine Centre in the bay can include anything from patrolling, rescuing wildlife, educating the public to setting up nest boxes for cuttlefish or carrying out surveys.

Walkers, runners and even an animal sanctuary have been rushing to get behind the Daily Echo-backed event, which offers a choice of a four-mile, 13-mile or 24-mile route.

And while participants are busy signing up sponsors, the Margaret Green Foundation Trust animal sanctuary at Church Knowle has stepped in to offer a new start and finish point.

Difficulties arose with the planned venue at Tyneham and now all three routes, created by Dorset Wildlife Trust to celebrate the three decades of the marine reserve, now start and finish at Church Knowle.

Everyone who completes the course will receive a ceramic medallion and the top fundraiser will win a two-night stay for two at the Aramay Boutique B&B in St Agnes, Cornwall.

The winning walker will be able to relax in luxury and enjoy some more coastal scenery, surfing or just a well-earned rest.
