A TRIAL run of a new out-of-hours care service for Swanage and the surrounding area has been launched.
The service will run initially for a period of four months and Dorset Primary Care Trust (PCT) says the move will make it easier to get treatment when GP surgeries are closed.
It comes after the trust suggested last year that the minor injuries unit at Swanage Hospital should close between 10pm and 8am.
A campaign was launched to keep the unit open 24 hours a day and the trust says the new system is the product of a public consultation.
The message is to "talk before you walk", by calling the service on 0845 600 10 13. After giving details of the situation, a patient will be called back by a doctor, who will suggest what to do next.
That could include seeing an on-duty emergency care practitioner or a paramedic at Swanage Hospital, or a home visit.
Carole Lawrence-Parr, director of strategic development at the PCT, said: "The new service will be monitored during the four-month trial and there will be a public meeting in February at which people will be able to make their views known about how it is working.
"We are confident the new arrangements will provide prompt medical advice and help to the people of Swanage when they need it."
People should still dial 999 if they think life is in danger. The NHS Direct number, 0845 46 47, is also available.
The Swanage Minor Injuries Unit is open 8am to 10pm seven days a week.
