Opies Organic Sweet Pickle (£1.47 for 290g) If you like your pickle very sweet, then this might be for you. It tasted more like a chutney than a pickle and there was very little in the way of a tangy taste and chunks of vegetables. That said it would go well with vintage cheddar, but the high price and over-sweet flavour works against it 2/5
Heinz Ploughman's Pickle (63p for 280g) This is a very good pickle - it's tangy and chunky yet at the same time rich and creamy. It does have a slightly artificial hint to it. However, the price is also right as this works out as one of the cheapest, helping make this a worthy runner up 3.5/5
Lidl Sweet Pickle (69p for 454g) This works out as the cheapest pickle out of the five, although that is not reflected in the taste. It's chunky and successfully finds the right balance between bitter and sweet, making this a very tangy condiment for sarnies. All things considered, this has to be the pickle of the bunch 4/5
Branston Original Pickle (81p for 360g) You expect big things from Branston, but on this pickle they simply don't deliver. The taste is overpowering and bitter and sadly can't compete with its rivals 2/5
ASDA Sweet Pickle (73p for 295g) There's not much separating this from the Heinz effort, and even the price difference is negligible. ASDA's pickle manages to deliver a tangy taste and there are plenty of chunky bits floating about. Another worthy runner up 3.5/5
