The 2024 General Election is just a couple of weeks away now, and households around Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole will be considering who to vote for.

Rishi Sunak will be hoping to maintain the current majority that the Conservative Party has in Parliament while Keir Starmer is looking to have Labour leading the Government for the first time since 2010.

The last general election took place in 2019 and with the next one due on July 4, you might wonder how your area voted all those years ago.

We have put together a map showing how the entire UK voted, but let’s take a closer look at the seats around the BCP area.

How did the BCP area vote in the 2019 General Election?

The BCP area is split up into five seats in Parliament, and here is the breakdown of which candidates won them.

Bournemouth West

The Conservatives held the seat of Bournemouth West with a majority of 10,150 votes.

In total four candidates ran to be MP for the area and the electoral turnout was 62%, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Conor Burns (Conservatives) - 24,550 votes
  • David Stokes (Labour) - 14,400 votes
  • Jon Nicholas (Liberal Democrats) - 4,931 votes
  • Simon Bull (The Green Party) - 2,096 votes

Bournemouth East

The Conservatives held the seat of Bournemouth East with a majority of 8,806 votes.

In total six candidates ran to be MP for the area and the electoral turnout was 66.5%, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Tobias Ellwood (Conservatives) - 24,926 votes
  • Corrie Drew (Labour) - 16,120 votes
  • Philip Dunn (Liberal Democrats) - 5,418 votes
  • Alasdair Keddie (The Green Party) - 2,049 votes
  • Ben Aston (Independent) - 447 votes
  • Emma Johnson (Independent) - 314 votes

Christchurch

The Conservatives held the seat of Christchurch with a majority of 24,617 votes.

In total four candidates ran to be MP for the area and the electoral turnout was 72.6%, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Christopher Chope (Conservatives) - 33,894 votes
  • Mike Cox (Liberal Democrats) - 9,277 votes
  • Andrew Dunne (Labour) - 6,568 votes
  • Chris Rigby (The Green Party) - 2,212 votes

Poole

The Conservatives held the seat of Poole with a majority of 19,116 votes.

In total five candidates ran to be MP for the area and the electoral turnout was 68.2%, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Robert Syms (Conservatives) - 29,599 votes
  • Sue Aitkenhead (Labour) - 10,483 votes
  • Victoria Collins (Liberal Democrats) - 7,819 votes
  • Barry Harding-Rathbone (The Green Party) - 1,702 votes
  • David Young (Independent) - 848 votes

Mid Dorset and North Poole

The Conservatives held the seats of Mid Dorset and North Poole with a majority of 14,898 votes.

In total four candidates ran to be MP for the area and the electoral turnout was 74.8%, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Michael Tomlinson (Conservatives) - 29,548 votes
  • Vikki Slade (Liberal Democrats) - 14,650 votes
  • Joanne Oldale (Labour) - 3,402 votes
  • Natalie Carswell (The Green Party) - 1,330 votes

What were the UK general election results in 2019?

In 2019, the Conservative Party won a majority with a total of 365 seats.



The Conservatives gained 47 seats which was up from the previous election two years earlier.

Boris Johnson, who was Prime Minister at the time, needed 365 seats to claim a Tory majority.

In contrast, the Labour Party lost 59 seats which brought them to 203 in total.

Across the country, 81 parliamentary seats changed hands.

The Scottish National Party gained 13 seats which took them to 48 seats.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats won 11 seats (losing one from 2017) and the DUP won 8 (losing two).

Sinn Féin reported  7 seats won, whilst Plaid Cymru secured 4 seats.

Meanwhile, other parties (including the speaker) won 9 seats to take the total to 650 in the House of Commons.
