THE second phase of a £2million scheme to improve Holdenhurst Road is set to begin.

BCP Council will start the work in the road on Monday, June 24, which will repair the road and footpaths.

Several sections of the road between Buchanan Avenue and Capstone Place will be resurfaced.

There will be a series of phased road closures for just over tow weeks, with work also taking place on the Springbourne and Ashley Road signalised junctions.

Side roads and areas in between will also be repaired, in between where the road has deteriorated over time.

The council said this will result in a long-lasting smooth and quiet road surface.

Diversions will be in place as the road will be closed in both directions while work takes place.

Traffic heading towards Christchurch will go via the A338 and Cooper Dean roundabout, back to the Kings Park off slip.

Those heading towards Bournemouth will follow a temporary route from Iford roundabout via Cooper Dean roundabout to Springbourne roundabout.

The first week of work will consist of a deep reconstruction of the road.

This will mean 24-hour closures, with the Ashley Road signals turned off at 7am on Monday, June 24 and the section from Ashley Road to Buchanan Avenue closed until 6pm on Friday, June 28.

Ashley Road will remain open until 7am on Thursday, June 27, when the closure will be expanded to include Harrison Close.

The next day, June 28, all closures will be removed for the weekend.

In the second week, there will be daily daytime closures between 7am and 6pm.

Harrison Close to Buchanan Avenue will close again for resurfacing, followed by Maddison Avenue and Jefferson Avenue.

Resurfacing work at the Springbourne junction will be done overnight during the evenings of July 8 and 9 from 7pm to 6am, with the road open during the day.

The diversion will take motorists via Cleveland Road, St Clements Road, Palmerston Road, Centenary Way and Ashley Road in both directions.

Emergency services have been informed and the council has been working with Morebus to ensure temporary bus routes can operate smoothly.

Rhys Bright, head of engineering at BCP Council, said: “This programme of work is being carried out over a three-year period with the first phase already underway. Since October last year, we’ve been resurfacing footpaths and carrying out preparation work ready for the second and third phases.

“A further section of Holdenhurst Road from Wellington Road to Capstone Place will be resurfaced next year and will form the final phase of the project.

“We appreciate that during this work, local journeys will be affected with noise that may impact residents living nearby.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding, and where possible, please plan your journeys in advance to allow more time.”
