A WOODLAND was let charred after firefighters worked quickly to extinguish a blaze in the open.

Ferndown fire station were called to Avon Heath, Ringwood, on June 23 after reports of the fire.

Firefighters attended in the fire station’s Land-rover and due to their “quick response”, the fire was extinguished before it became “too unmanageable.”

The fire service are reminding the public that an amber wildlife warning has been issued ahead of a summer heatwave.

Wildfires are more likely in large areas of open land such as heathlands, fields and cliffsides, which can spread quickly and easily.

To avoid incidents, do not have open fires or use barbeques in the countryside, extinguish smoking materials properly and if you see a fire report it immediately to the fire service.

Group manager of DWFRS Graham Kewley said: “While the warmer weather is welcome after such a wet start to the year, it does mean that foliage will now be dry, and this can result in a greater risk of fires spreading if something happens to cause ignition.

“We would urge anyone going out and about in our beautiful countryside this weekend to take extra care, follow our advice to #BringAPicnicNotABarbecue, and avoid having campfires on heathland or in woodlands.”
