A SECURITY guard at the former maritime training centre at Steamer Point has spoken out against vandals after a large rock was thrown and said it 'could have killed someone'.
Steve Tyrell, a security guard at the former Maritime Coastguard Agency training facility, has decided to speak up on vandals at the now derelict site after a large rock was thrown over a wall and severely damaged his car.
Steve moved to the area as a security guard on behalf of Pennyfarthing Homes, which now owns the site in Christchurch, due to the amount of vandalism.
Steve believes the vandalism has now gone too far.
He said: "We had a big rock thrown at us which damaged the cars and that could have killed someone. I've had rocks and bricks thrown at me and the police are not interested.
"The kids have just smashed the buildings to pieces but every time you challenge them or catch them in the act, the police come along and do nothing."
Pennyfarthing Homes has tried to develop the site multiple times in the past but has been unsuccessful, most recently wanting to put 10 residential houses on the site.
Steve believes letting development occur would remove the issue and blocking the development allows for such behaviour to continue.
He said: "The developers are struggling to get the planning permission and he can't demolish the buildings because the council won't let him which is ludicrous.
"He could have used the buildings but now he can't because they've been ruined.
"I don't know what will be next because they'll just be able to get away with something."
Vandals have cut through the surrounding fences to get in and have caused the site to be covered in broken glass.
Despite efforts to board up doors, they have also torn their way into buildings with Steve concerned if a fire was lit it could cause them to burn down.
Ben Arnold, land and planning director at Pennyfarthing Homes, said: "Until we get planning approval we can't demolish the buildings.
"It has reduced with Steve's presence and we are concerned about the health and safety of people breaking in even though they are technically trespassing.
"We have a live planning application for ten houses and we're working with BCP to try and get the applications determined."
