CHRISTCHURCH Town Council has supported plans for six new flats in the high street.

Prior approval was sought for a change from retail to residential use at 38 High Street.

It comes in plans to introduce flats above and to the rear of the unit formerly home to M&Co.

Christchurch Town Council’s planning and regulatory committee discussed the scheme at its meeting on July 16.

Members recognised a need for additional housing in the town centre but emphasised the importance of ‘preserving and enhancing’ the retail presence in the area.

They stressed that the retail section of the building should remain unaffected by the proposed change of use, and said the retail front should be maintained.

Members also acknowledged the historical and architectural value of the building and stated that its 'unique characteristics should be retained', but recognised the building's external appearance ‘could be enhanced’ by the project.

Concerns were raised about the flats' zero-parking provision, with members emphasising the potential need for car parks for the elderly, families with children, and visitors.

It was resolved that Christchurch Town Council would support the proposal, but with conditions, which included the completion of a conservation study ‘to identify the unique architectural characteristics of the building, ensuring they are retained during the works’.

BCP Council is yet to make a decision on the planning application.
